Semi-dry cast stone is a blend of specially selected natural aggregates and fine silica sands with a cementitious binder and organic pigments to produce an aesthetically pleasing natural stone appearance.

Typically formed in timber moulds, Semi-dry cast stone can be multicast in a single day thus benefiting from decreased production times.

Used in the volume house building market to form heads, cills and copings, Semi-dry cast stone can also be used to form decorative stone dressings to more complex and architectural features such as balustrades and porticos.

Wet- cast stone is formed similarly to Semi-dry cast although the selection of materials may differ. The process involves filling timber or steel moulds with a fluid like mix that is left to harden over a 24-hour period. The moulds are stripped the next day to reveal a highly dense and extremely strong, durable product. The castings are typically treated with an etching process to reveal the natural stone appearance.

Wet-cast stone, sometimes known as precast stone, can be made in much larger units than Semi-dry cast stone and can incorporate reinforcement steel to an engineer’s design to accommodate structural loadings.

Fibre Reinforced Cast Stone (FRCS) is a construction material that is commonly used to form exterior cladding panels and features such as columns, spandrels, band courses as well as traditional window surrounds and copings. The inclusion of fibres and specialist admixtures allows the stone to be made in thin sections which reduces the weight of the overall component.

Design considerations for securing FRCS to the structure is extremely important and early engagement with the suppliers and installers is recommended to ensure adequate provision for the design and fabrication process.
